The era when order was disturbed by war,many samurais lost a job and became an outlaw. Trend that called "Basara" was prevalent in this period. "Basara" means that it's the tradition breaking, luxury, glitzy, and eccentric. If they weren't, Kabuki which is Japanese culture mightn't be born. When the situation becomes unstable, avant-garde (or underground) culture seems more likely to be noticed. Situation in the current is similar to it.
